Volterra
VOLTERRRA is a lovely town in the province of Pisa, not far from Florence, Siena and the coast, famous particularly for its Etruscan origins and the numerous archeological finds dating back to that era. It is known, therefore, as the “Etruscan city” and the “city of alabaster par excellence”.
You can still visit a good part of the city walls built in the IV century before Christ and two of the doors into the town, Porta Diana and Porta dell’Arco, as well as the old Acropoli which hosts several buildings and the foundations of two ancient temples. There are also many traces of the Roman domination, such as the fascinating Roman theatre, built on the side of a hill which naturally brings to mind an amphitheatre, brought to light only recently, sometime in the fifties. It is thought to have been built in and around the first century before Chist.
Among its lovely streets of timeless charm, it is possible to meet master craftsmen in their shops, ready to amaze you with their products in alabaster, all handmade and unique in their kind which have made Volterra famous all over the world.
